Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the #1 factor for local search visibility. This guide walks you through optimizing yours step by step - completely FREE!

⏱️ If You Only Have 30 Minutes, Do These 3 Things:

  1. Claim and verify your GBP — 10 minutes at business.google.com
  2. Add 10 photos — exterior, interior, team, logo (the big 4)
  3. Get your first 5 reviews — ask your 5 happiest customers today

Done. You're now visible in local search. The rest of this guide is for when you have more time.

💡 Did You Know?
Businesses with complete GBP profiles are 2x more likely to be considered trustworthy by customers.

What's New in GBP (2026 Updates)

Google changed how it ranks local businesses in 2026. Here's what changed and what to do about it.

📊 March 2026 Core Update: Reviews Are Now About Recency, Not Volume

Google's March 2026 Core Update specifically targeted local search quality. Per Sterling Sky's ongoing local SEO tracking: post-update, fresh reviews in the last 30 days rank an average of 2.3 positions higher than historical review volume.

What to do: Aim for 1+ fresh review per week, not just 25+ total. Recency beats quantity now.

💬 WhatsApp & Text Messaging Now Supported

Google now allows verified businesses to add WhatsApp or text messaging as a direct contact option. Customers can message you directly from your GBP without calling or visiting your website.

What to do: See Step 2 below for setup. (We just added it.)

📸 Cover Photo Spec: 1024×576 (16:9)

Google updated the cover photo specification in April 2026. The optimal cover photo is now 1024×576 pixels (16:9 aspect ratio), JPG or PNG, max 5MB.

What to do: See Step 3 below for the full photo spec. Use this exact size for your cover photo to avoid stretching or cropping.

⚠️ Inactive Profile Penalty

2026 shift: inactive profiles (no posts, no review responses, no updates) get meaningful visibility drops. Multiple local SEO guides now warn: GBP is a living profile, not set-and-forget.

What to do: Post + respond + update monthly minimum. Even small changes (new photo, quick post) keep the profile active.

📋 Step 1: Claim Your Business

  1. Go to business.google.com
  2. Search for your business name
  3. If it exists, click "Claim this business"
  4. If not, click "Add your business"
  5. Follow the verification steps (usually postcard or phone)

📝 Step 2: Complete Every Field

Fill out ALL of these fields - don't leave anything blank!

Business Info

  • ✅ Business Name: Exact match to your signage
  • ✅ Address: Accurate, matches other listings
  • ✅ Phone: Use a local number with area code (306)
  • ✅ Website: Your website URL
  • ✅ Hours: Regular hours + holiday hours

Categories

  • ✅ Primary Category: Your main service (e.g., "Gym")
  • ✅ Secondary Categories: Related services (up to 10)

Attributes

  • ✅ Accessibility: Wheelchair accessible, etc.
  • ✅ Amenities: WiFi, parking, etc.
  • ✅ Payments: Credit cards, etc.
  • ✅ WhatsApp or Text: Direct messaging (2026 feature, verified businesses only)

📸 Step 3: Add Photos (LOTS of them!)

Businesses with 50+ photos get 2x more clicks than those without!

Photo Types to Add

  • 🏠 Exterior: Your building from the street
  • 🏋️ Interior: Main workout areas
  • 👥 Team: Staff members
  • 🏷️ Logo: Your logo

🎯 Target: 50+ photos minimum. 100+ is even better!

📢 Step 4: Post Every Week

Google Posts appear on your GBP and can boost visibility!

Post Types

  • 🆕 New: New equipment, classes, or services
  • 🏆 Events: Competitions, open houses
  • 💰 Offers: Promotions, discounts
  • 💡 Tips: Fitness or maintenance tips

Posting Schedule

  • 📅 Minimum: 2x per week
  • 📅 Best: Every 2-3 days
  • ⏰ When: Posts expire after 7 days!

❓ Step 5: Q&A - NO LONGER AVAILABLE

UPDATE (May 2026): Google discontinued the Q&A feature in November 2025. It has been replaced by AI-powered automatic answers!

🤖 What Replaced Q&A?

Google now uses AI (called "Ask Maps") to automatically answer questions by pulling from:

  • ✅ Your business profile information
  • ✅ Your Google reviews
  • ✅ Your website content

✅ What to Do Instead

  • 📝 Website Content: Make sure your website has answers to common questions (hours, pricing, parking, etc.)
  • 📋 Complete Profile: The more complete your GBP, the better Google's AI can answer
  • ⭐ Reviews: Google's AI pulls answers from reviews too!

⭐ Step 6: Get Reviews

Reviews are the #2 local SEO factor after GBP completeness!

How to Get Reviews

  • 📱 QR Code: Put a QR code on receipts/business cards
  • 📧 Email: Send follow-up email after visits
  • 💬 In-Person: Ask after great service
  • 🔗 Direct Link: Use your GBP review link

Review Targets

  • 🎯 Minimum: 25 reviews
  • 🏆 Competitive: 100+ reviews
  • 📈 Monthly: 5+ new reviews

💬 Step 7: Respond to ALL Reviews

Responding to reviews builds trust and improves rankings!

Response Templates

For 5-Star Reviews:

"Thank you so much for the wonderful review, [Name]! We're thrilled to hear you enjoyed [specific thing they mentioned]. We can't wait to see you again! 💪"

For 1-3 Star Reviews:

"Thank you for your feedback, [Name]. We're sorry to hear your experience wasn't perfect. We'd love the opportunity to make things right. Please contact us directly at [phone/email] so we can address your concerns."

🎯 Target: 100% response rate - respond to EVERY review!

🎯 Quick Checklist Summary
